Edgar Allen Poe was a Boston native, born January 18, 1809. Poe’s parents, actors, divorced when he was young. Two years after his parents died, Poe became orphaned. John and Francis Allen, who were wealthy, adopted Poe. He attended University of Virginia briefly after being educated in England. Poe’s writing career began after a brief time in the military. At first, his poetry wasn’t commercially profitable. He started working as a literary editor for the southern Literary Messenger, in August 1835. He had a rough start due to his drinking habits, but he became editor within a few months. Poe, now 27 years old, married Virginia, his 13-year-old cousin. Poe began publishing stories and poems in 1838 with Arthur Gordon Pym’s narrative. This established Poe as an American Literature master. The Rave, published in 1845, was a groundbreaking work of poetry. His composition theories and these poems helped him to create modern perspectives on poetry and short stories.

Poe wrote in 1846 an essay outlining the elements of a good short tale. The Tell-Tale Heart is an example of these essentials. Unity of impression is where there is a consistent tone throughout the story. Poe was also the founder of several fiction genres including modern horror, psychological horror, and science fiction. Despite his artistic success, Poe was plagued by personal tragedy and hardships. Poe began to drink more and became depressed after his wife died from tuberculosis. Poe died in a strange manner.

He was found on the streets of New York, dressed in a shabby, dehydrated, and unable move, on October 3, 1849. Four days later, he died. According to some reports, Poe died four days later.
