Henry David Thoreau’s Call To Live A Simple Life In Walden

“As your life becomes simpler, the laws of nature will become more simple; solitude will no longer be lonely, poverty will not exist, nor weakness weakness.” This quote is from Walden. It was written by Henry David Thoreau, an American writer and philosopher who spent two years living in solitude on Walden Pond. Thoreau pursued simplified lifestyle. Two years in Walden, Thoreau had only one axe to use and lived an entirely self-sufficient life. The human race has evolved and is now a full-fledged, happy society. Because of the constant pressures of modern life, the daily bustle seems filled with gunpowder smells. More people suffer from mental problems. Why don’t we try Thoreau? But, today’s society sees it as impossible for people to leave society and seek seclusion in the mountains. It is possible, in fact. A simple lifestyle is best. Living in simplicity can have many benefits. It can relieve pressure and help you feel better. By changing your lifestyle, you can feel the beauty and wonder of nature. You can take mountains and rivers as your neighbors as well as birds, animals, and make them friends. A simple lifestyle can help people live a more comfortable life and reap the economic rewards. Like Thoreau, simple living is good for everyone.

Simple living is better for your mental health. Mental health is a hot topic in society, unconsciously. According to Dana S. Dunn from Moravian College Bethlehem, 6.2% of the nation’s bachelor’s were awarded with a psychology degree. After business and health-related degrees, psychology is increasingly popular. According to this data, psychologists are becoming more sought-after. Depression is a common word that we all know. Today, 15 to 20% of adults suffer from severe depression at one time or another. In 2016, 6.7% Americans experienced a major depression episode. Psychosocial stress and traumatic events in the world are two of the most common causes. Many people hear about their depression. There are many complaints about people. Some complain about how hard it is to study, others complain about how tired they are, while others complain about not being able to do their jobs well. There is always too much to do in life. People carry heavy burdens on their shoulders. No one knows when they might be crushed. People consume far more than what they need at current levels. This increases the pressure on people’s minds. Thoreau’s Walden stated that “I wanted life to be deep and sap all the life out of it, to live strong and Spartan like as to put to rout anything that wasn’t living, cut a broad swath to shave close, drive life to its lowest point and reduce it in all its facets.” Simple lifestyles can help people be less tired. Living simple is about understanding and sustaining your own basic needs. This is an effective way to get out of the stress and anxiety that surrounds us in today’s society. To live a simple lifestyle is to eliminate unnecessary and unimportant items and focus on the things you enjoy. Living a life that is enjoyable and fulfilling will reduce the stress in life. You can look back at the time it’s been since you last saw nature. Modern technology is everywhere in our lives, as well as social media and other digital tools. Natural things are rare. Cooper and Patrick G, authors of “Social Media,” found that social media was responsible for 28% of American time spent online in 2015. Social media is becoming more popular. Most people spend their time on social media, even when they have very little free time. As a kid, I remember my parents taking me to the parks every weekend. These were my two favorite days of the week. I always had a great time at the park. Many children were my age and I met them in the park. We ran around the grass like wild horses. Sometimes, we behaved like lions fighting for prey. After some time, we started to enjoy playing together again. We were joyful and unbridled. Today, I often see little children owning their smartphones. They aren’t talking to anyone, and they don’t go outside. Instead, they play quietly with their smartphones. Tak Yan’s data from Hong Kong shows that more then 85% of students between 12 and 20 years old used smartphones. These data suggest that almost all teenagers own a mobile phone. Children spend too much time using social media and technology that they don’t spend enough time outdoors. Thoreau’s deep love of nature was expressed in walden. Nature is like music. The music is a soundtrack to Thoreau’s free-spirited dreams. It allows them to let their minds sink into the beauty and wonder of nature. He observed nature and played with the foxes, observing the beauty of nature. He sat on the sunlit shore of Sumac, Pecan and Sumac trees in summer mornings. He also measured the lake’s depth on the ice during winter. However, I think Thoreau is the only person who has had this experience. You can live a simple life, not worry about social media or phones, and still enjoy the best natural beauty around. They will soon realize that nature is their greatest gift. Nature’s beauty cannot be duplicated.

Saving money can also be possible by living simple. Although many people purchase items to relax and feel happier, materialistic lifestyles often lead to increased stress and anxiety. Statista, an online statistical portal, says that luxury market revenue was $424.991 million in 2019. Market growth is expected to be 2.7% per year. The temptation to compare and desire luxury goods makes it easy for people to purchase things they don’t need. American society saw rapid growth and industrialization. Hedonism was popularized by the rise in prosperity through commerce and industry. While people may be busy their whole lives, many find they no longer have enough savings once they turn old. They seem to spend their money unconsciously in a mess. The benefits of living a simple lifestyle are obvious at this stage. A lifestyle that is simple and does not require you to consume wealth or consume excessively is called living simply. Financial security is one of the main benefits of living simply. Financial goals are easier when people save less and consume less. It is possible to live a debt-free lifestyle. Your life is easier when there are no monthly payments. Satisfaction is the key to happiness. Faultfinders are not good in all circumstances. The faultfinder is not able to see the best in all circumstances, just as Thoreau stated in Walden. Even in paradise, the fault-finder can find faults. Your life is enough.

Some people believe that it’s impossible to live a simple life in modern times. Thoreau’s isolation is unimaginable. Thoreau was not always a recluse. Walden Pond was his only home for approximately two years. After feeling satisfied, he decided to leave Walden Pond. People worry that their pursuit of a simple lifestyle and the slow pace of their social lives will lead to others feeling strange. People cannot live apart from their friends and family by moving to the mountains. Yet, living a simple lifestyle does not make you isolated. You can still talk to your friends. “Living simply doesn’t have to be a one-size fits all approach. You can start small and then if you feel comfortable, go at your own pace. This is why simple living does not have to be boring. Simple life can be a way to express your true self and help you achieve your goals. It is also very easy to retire in peace and quiet in the mountains. People can enjoy the moment and not worry about how others are doing. People seek a simpler lifestyle not to be unhappy, but to simplify their lives.

Everyone should attempt to live a simple lifestyle. Even though it is difficult to live the life Thoreau wanted, we should still strive for a simple existence. Simple living can allow people to relax, experience the beauty and serenity of nature, as well as save money. Confucius was the founder of Confucianism, an ancient Chinese educator. He said, “Life’s really simple, but it insists on being complicated.” People should do only what is necessary, and not think or talk about it. The results will be just what they need, just as you should, more relaxed, easy and effortless.
